Mr Fergal Hickey

A native of Kildare, Fergal Hickey qualified from UCD in 1985.  After his internship in the Mater Hospital, Dublin, he joined the Western Surgical Training Scheme before moving to the UK in 1988 to pursue a career in Accident & Emergency Medicine, now Emergency Medicine.  After completing a variety of posts in the North East of England, he obtained a Registrar and later a Senior Registrar post in Emergency Medicine at Leicester Royal Infirmary.  In May 1995 Fergal took up the post as Consultant in Emergency Medicine in Sligo and remained there until his retirement from clinical practice in 2022, during which time the department expanded from having a single-handed Consultant to being a 4 Consultant department.

Fergal completed his first ATLS Provider Course in 1991 in Newcastle, became an Instructor in 1995 and has been an Instructor and Course Director for more than 20 years. For the past 18 years he has been National Director for ATLS in Ireland which included overseeing the transition to the 10th Edition of the course.
